The Cordovan Proportion: Origami ¿the Euclid?

Proportion Constants, those magic numbers, indeterminate and infinite decimals, that, however define something as rational as all elemental, and simultaneously, canon are also something as vague as spiritual and Beauty. This duality reason-impossible spirit of writing numbers, appears to contain some of that divine essence that draws the world.

The Alhama Mosque of Cordoba, It is also subject to a “Golden Rule”. The mystique of numbers in Islam, through eight gives the greater proximity of the divine. Represents the throne of Allah is the supreme subject of eight angels. It is the “theater” of Islam and like the cross draw plants Christian churches.

The Cordovan architect Rafael de la Hoz Arderius study is the first to cross the Constant Proportion architecture in Cordoba. Search the relationship and influence of Euclid's Elements and its size is in. But history is always multifaceted and many influences on the ideas. Thus it happens that before translation of Euclid in Cordoba, comes through Oriental captives of the Battle of Samarkand (750), the papermaking techniques and with it, an oriental ritual become popular entertainment. El Origami (papiroflexia) became popular in the Arab population of the eighth century and builders find it is this technique many applications to the construction, as Origami folds allow obtaining more regular polygons without tool that a square of paper and hands. Euclid is naturally intuitive content of this simple paper folds.

The work is a graphic reflection tries to enroll in a grid of octagons the and the different stages of construction of the temple. This gives the curious result that the two essential parts of the mosque; Mihrab as representing the god, and minaret as representing the voice of the man, are enrolled in one of the two bases * traditional origami: The Base Pez.

(*) Base is called the first folds are made on the square paper to construct any figure. There are two fundamental bases: The base comet, for building odd sided polygons, Fish and Base pairs with which polygons are obtained between leaving the octagon easily.

  2. So sorry, but the Cordovan proportion can only be seen on the floor of the mosque of Cordoba if you are not aware that there have been various extensions. Rafael de la Hoz performs its calculations on the work already completed, not considering that it is a palimpsest. At least three of the four extensions are made not based on 1'306, sino a …………
This in no way contradicts the possibilities of reason called Cordoba, but we must begin to clarify that is not involved in the layout of the congregational mosque, we are in the Original (square), or extensions.
In my opinion (totally subjective, matizable, criticism, reprehensible, ……was), Cordoba reason is not particularly aesthetic, nor particularly practical. I see that is used or the Cordoba Caliphate. There are other many more “odds”, We have more play in a harmonious architectural design.
