Chest of Santo Domingo de Silos Provincial Museum (Burgos).

Mohamed'm Zeiyan, Basin.

“He kept the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos, and now it is saved in the Provincial Museum of Burgos, one ivory casket, knock cap, measuring 345 millimeters long, 200 wide and 190 High.

The jewel is very patched. Because she lost one of the side panels of the box and the upper and the sides of the lid, and will ivory tablerillos were replaced by sheets of gold and enamelled copper, by adding an armor edges, Copper also gold and enamel, to adjust and sustain ivory cloths.

Of these copper plates that primitive Chest patched, the side of the box has the image of Santo Domingo de Silos, coated and staff, and two angels, red enamel, green, blue and white; the horizontal top cover, leads, within a circle of two color cones rights and invested respectively, one figure the horse, medallion to two dragons surrounding chimeric, White Enamel, green and red, and extreme angles there are four somewhat higher metal plates in which traces are, perhaps he has lost cabochons: and the slope of the cover board, le that lack, was replaced with a copper plate deficientísima gold with ornaments made chisel, partly decayed.

The trimming of the edges seems made on two occasions and both hands, a bracket for carrying the work geometric enamel, winding stems with other birds in, flowers and leaves and other left unglazed, sobredoradas.

Still lost one of the squadrons of the boards of the box.

The ornamentation of ivory panels is truly beautiful: the best that can be seen from the Eastern influence in art Cordovan.

The above board is divided, two smooth horizontal junquillos, into three zones, the upper two cut by the space for the lock respected, missing; and in boxes are the daffodils are hunting scenes, lions, taps, struggles of men with beasts, Unicorns and bulls and lions fighting and biting.

The rear panel but does not differ from the previous three separate bound from the two upper zones, clamps imposed by hinges; scenes and animals are the same.

The right side is the one that retains, addition divided by the same two horizontal battens into three zones, has items, also three upper and lower vertical and two other ends still further divided by new horizontally junquillo, into two rectangles: four corners carries such dual representation in each symbol of good and evil: to the sides and top three deer in lush horns and in the center two beautiful peacocks, faced with bound necks, and lower central one form with fine plasterwork five scrolls enclosing stems critters.

All boxes have, in the spaces left free Figures, long stems, wavy, Carved peak, striated, and leaves and pineapples carved bezel.

The panels are trimmed in such a fine continuous cord.

Missing two pieces, anterior and posterior, epigraphic area, which is the top tab; and what remains of it is read, written with characters cúficos decorated and carved at right angles, without ridges or dotted, as follows:

'Permanent to its owner ..., Allah prolong his days. Among what was done in the city of Cuenca,…, seven ten and four. Obra de Mohamed ben Zeiyan. Glorifíquelo Alá ".

Ferrandis think this trinket would be devoted to Almamún, Prince of Cuenca. I think that is right, but it is provided that misread the date of 417. The other two ivories Basin that are conserved -The Casket of Palencia which is in the National Archaeological Museum and the Cathedral of San Giusto, Narbonne- are dedicated to the son of Almamún, su Hachib, Mohamed Abu Ismali, and the first is dated 1049/1050, when Almamún reigned in Toledo and his son Ismail was Governor of Cuenca. It is to believe that the same date, year 441 Muhammad, and not 417 is the casket of Santo Domingo de Silos.

Amador de los Rios was wrong reading Cordoba, establishing the equivalence of 417 to the 1025 and stating that Almamún year reigned in Cordoba 1025. Abu’l Hassan Yahya Almamún, the kingdom in Toledo bell from 1038; and it was on to Cordoba 1070, in which took, remaining there until, in 1075, was poisoned by his minister Ben Ocaxa.”

  1. A good study. Although the influence of the moment Cordoba, it does appear that refers to Al-Mamun Cuenca, and therefore, well is accept. Pity additives, but that adds even more character. I hope you know him the convenient Burgos value and keep it in the name of humanity.
